You need three kinds of book for each O Level subject: a coursebook to learn from, topical past papers to drill each chapter, and yearly papers to rehearse the full exam. Buy them in that order, and save the yearly papers for the last six to eight weeks. For Urdu, first check whether your school enters you for 3247 or 3248, because the books are not interchangeable.

Coursebook, Topical or Yearly: What Each One Does
A coursebook is where you learn. Hodder, Cambridge University Press and Oxford all publish syllabus-matched titles, and your school will usually name one.
Topical past papers group old exam questions by chapter. Use them the week you finish a topic, while it's fresh, to find what hasn't landed.
Yearly past papers are complete exams in order. Sit each in one go, timed, at a desk. That's how you build exam stamina.
Before buying any of them, match the syllabus code and exam year on the cover to the exam you're sitting.
Which O Level Books Suit Which Student

Our view: if you can buy only one extra book this term, make it a yearly paper book for your weakest subject. Start with Redspot's English Language yearly, or the classified Physics Paper 1 if MCQs are your weak spot. O Level Urdu Past Papers: 3247 or 3248?
There are two O Level Urdu exams, and buying for the wrong one wastes money.
First Language Urdu (3247) is examined in the June series only under the 2025–2026 syllabus. Both papers are answered in Urdu, and Paper 2 tests prescribed poetry and prose.
Second Language Urdu (3248) runs in June and November under the 2024–2026 syllabus. Paper 1, Reading and Writing, takes 1 hour 45 minutes and carries 50 marks. Paper 2, Grammar, Writing and Translation, takes 1 hour 30 minutes.
Local publishers label First Language books "Syllabus A" and Second Language books "Syllabus B".

Can I switch from Second Language Urdu (3248) to First Language Urdu (3247)?
Your school makes the exam entries, so ask your Urdu teacher first. The two exams differ a lot: 3247 is answered entirely in Urdu and includes prescribed literature.
What is in 3248 Paper 1?
Five exercises: short-answer questions (8 marks), multiple matching (9), note-making (9), a summary based on the note-making text (10) and a writing task (14), according to Cambridge's 2024–2026 syllabus.
How many prose texts does 3247 Paper 2 set?
The 2025–2026 syllabus names eight prose articles to study, alongside the prescribed poetry.
Do IGCSE and O Level books overlap?
Some coursebooks are written for both, as titles like Susan Grant's Cambridge IGCSE and O Level Economics show. Cambridge places O Level and IGCSE at the same level, but check the syllabus code before you buy.
