You have finished (or are about to finish) intermediate, you have decided on law, and now one test stands between you and an LLB seat: the HEC LAT. The good news? It is a very passable test if you prepare with the right material. The bad news? Walk into any market and you will see a stack of LAT preparation books, all claiming to be the best.
This guide cuts through the noise. We compare the LAT preparation books available at Urdu Bazar Online, with real prices, and help you pick the best book for LAT test preparation for your budget and study style.
Quick answer: If you want one dedicated LAT book, start with High Scoring LAT by Dogar Brothers (Rs.1,600). On a tighter budget, LAT (Law Admission Test) by Caravan (Rs.900) is the lowest-priced dedicated LAT book in our range.
What is the HEC LAT? (The Law Admission Test at a glance)
The Law Admission Test (LAT) is conducted by the Education Testing Council of the Higher Education Commission (ETC-HEC). According to HEC's LLB curriculum, you need 12 years of schooling (HSSC/A Levels or an IBCC equivalent) with at least 45% marks, and a 50% score in the LAT, to get admission to an LLB programme.
Here is the official LAT pattern, taken from HEC's content weightage document:
| Part | What it covers | Questions / marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part I: MCQs | English | 20 MCQs | 100 minutes for all 75 MCQs |
| General Knowledge | 20 MCQs | ||
| Pakistan Studies | 10 MCQs | ||
| Islamiat | 10 MCQs | ||
| Urdu | 10 MCQs | ||
| Mathematics | 5 MCQs | ||
| Part II: Writing | Essay: write 1 out of 3 topics (English or Urdu) | 15 marks | 40 minutes for Part II |
| Personal Statement (English or Urdu) | 10 marks |
That adds up to 75 MCQs plus a 40-minute writing section: 140 minutes in total.
Two things jump out:
- English and General Knowledge are 40 of the 75 MCQs. That is where most of your MCQ marks are.
- The writing part matters. The essay and personal statement are worth 25 marks together. Many students ignore them and regret it.

High Scoring LAT by Dogar Brothers (Rs.1,600)
Dogar Brothers is one of the best-known names in Pakistani test-prep guides, and High Scoring LAT is their dedicated law admission test book. It is a sensible "main book" for most students: follow it start to finish, then practise.
Good for: students who want one dedicated LAT book to build their plan around. Keep in mind: no single book covers current affairs right up to your test date. Pair it with a daily newspaper.
LAT (Law Admission Test) by Caravan (Rs.900)
Caravan's LAT guide is the lowest-priced dedicated LAT book on our list. If you are watching your budget, or you already have strong English and just need structured MCQ practice, this is a smart pick.
Good for: budget-conscious students and quick revision. Keep in mind: at a lower price point, you may want to add your own extra English and essay practice.
N Series LAT by M.A. Chaudhary (Rs.2,200)
N Series LAT is the highest-priced LAT book on our list. Many students use a second book like this to see more practice questions in a different style after finishing their main guide.
Good for: serious students who want a second book for extra practice. Keep in mind: if you can only afford one book, start with a single main guide and spend the rest of your time on practice.
Law GAT Guide by Caravan (Rs.800): not for the LAT
We list this one so you don't buy it by mistake. The LAW GAT is a different test from the LAT. Buy this only if you are preparing for the LAW GAT, not for LLB admission through the LAT.
Which LAT book is right for you?
Still unsure? Pick the line that sounds most like you:
- "I want one book and I'm done." Get High Scoring LAT (Dogar Brothers, Rs.1,600).
- "I'm on a tight budget." Get LAT by Caravan (Rs.900) and use free newspaper editorials for essay practice.
- "I want to score as high as possible." Use one main guide (Dogar or Caravan) plus N Series LAT (Rs.2,200) for extra practice.
- "I'm actually preparing for LAW GAT." That's the Law GAT Guide by Caravan (Rs.800), not a LAT book.
Two books are usually better than three. Finishing one guide properly beats skimming three.
How to prepare for the law admission test in 4–6 weeks
Here is a simple plan that fits the official pattern:
Week 1: Diagnose. Attempt a full practice test from your LAT book under timed conditions (100 minutes for the MCQs, 40 for writing). Note your weakest sections.
Weeks 2–3: Build English and General Knowledge. These two sections are 40 of the 75 MCQs. Do daily vocabulary, grammar and GK sets from your book. Read one newspaper every day for current affairs.
Week 4: Cover Pakistan Studies, Islamiat, Urdu and Maths. These total 35 MCQs. They are short sections, but each correct answer counts.
Weeks 5–6: Writing and full tests. - Write at least two essays a week (choose from three topics, just like the real test) and get someone to check them. - Draft and polish your personal statement: why law, why you, and what you hope to do. - Take at least two full timed tests from your book.
Quick tips: - Time yourself from day one. 75 MCQs in 100 minutes is about 80 seconds per question. - Keep an "error notebook" of every question you get wrong, and revise it weekly. - In Part II, plan your essay for 5 minutes before you write. - You can write in English or Urdu. Choose the language you express yourself in best and practise in that language.

According to HEC, the LAT has 75 MCQs in 100 minutes (English 20, General Knowledge 20, Pakistan Studies 10, Islamiat 10, Urdu 10, Mathematics 5), followed by a 40-minute writing part: one essay out of three topics (15 marks) and a personal statement (10 marks), in English or Urdu.
What are the passing marks for the LAT?

Is the LAW GAT the same as the LAT?
No. The LAT is the Law Admission Test required for LLB admission. The LAW GAT is a separate test. Caravan's Law GAT Guide (Rs.800) is for the LAW GAT, so don't buy it for the LAT.
Can I order LAT books online with cash on delivery?
Yes. Urdu Bazar Online delivers across Pakistan: Rs.300 in Karachi (1–2 days) and Rs.400 elsewhere (3–5 days). You can pay by cash on delivery, bank transfer or EasyPaisa.
How long should I prepare for the LAT?
Many students do well with a focused 4–6 week plan: diagnose with a practice test, build English and General Knowledge (40 of 75 MCQs), cover the shorter sections, then practise essays, the personal statement and full timed tests.
Final word
The LAT rewards steady, focused practice, not a pile of books. Pick one main LAT preparation book, add a second only if you need more practice, read the news daily, and write those essays. Good luck. Your LLB journey starts here, with Urdu Bazar Online.
